OBSIDIAN
As we come up to the darker months - the clocks go back and we celebrate Samhain (Halloween). It is believed that the veil between us and the spirit world is at its thinnest - no better time to have a delve in to the properties of Obsidian!
OBSIDIAN
Is formed organically when lava rich in silicic acid cool extremely rapidly also called Rock Glass or Volcanic Glass. Probably the famous “Dragon Glass” mentioned in Game of Thrones.
Obsidian was used for some of the oldest cultural artefacts of man. As early as Palaeolithic times, obsidian blades were used for cult/ritual purposes as has been shown by finds from burials. I can vouch that Obsidian is VERY sharp! 🩸
It was regarded as a stone that would drive out demons, and in the Middle Ages as an aid for magical rituals.
Mayan priests used Obsidian (Scrying) Mirrors for predicting the future.
Types of Obsidian:
Black Obsidian (black opaque) the large raw crystal & large skull.
Silver Sheen Obsidian (includes finely distributed gas bubbles-giving a silvery effect) The small pebble
Rainbow Obsidian (colourful iridescence through trapped water bubbles) The oval rainbow-hued stone.
Mahogany Obsidian (high Iron content causes brown patches) The heart & small skull.
Gold Sheen Obsidian (includes finely distributed gas bubbles-giving a golden effect) The Mayan carving
Snowflake Obsidian (small inclusions of Feldspar) Separate photo of a handful of black & white tumblestones.

Natural Blur Obsidian is very rare & expensive - most pieces are man-made.
Obsidian is most popular for its properties of protection, reflection and grounding - resonating with the Root Chakra - Muladhara.
Linked with the concept of darkness, Obsidian helps us to have honesty and strong moral principles which help us to see our ”Shadow Sides” in their true nature, so they can once more become part of the self.
This is how we can reach the “unimpeachability of the warrior” - a spiritual invulnerability and freedom. Accepting we are all made of light AND dark.
Obsidian dissolves shocks, fear, blocks and traumatisation.
Purifies the atmosphere of negative spiritual influences - giving protection from psychic attacks - reflecting/deflecting negative energies back.
